The UK recently held a referendum where the public narrowly voted to leave the EU, and immigration was a key concern in the winning vote. Immigrants have been accused of increasing demand for public services and increasing pressure on housing. Yet the numbers show a different, counter intuitive story where immigrants are a minor issue compared to changing British lifestyles.
Data visualisation can combine facts with impact – stories at a glance, striking and memorable, shareable objects. This competition seeks to create data visualisations of immigration and social statistics for Scientists for EU. This can provide a more balanced view on immigration and highlight the real sources of pressure on public services in the UK.
Who should join
We’re inviting designers, developers, data wranglers (including data analysts, data scientists, statisticians), and storytellers to collaborate and create data visualisations that deliver stories about immigration based on numbers. This is a two day challenge where people gather and create static or interactive visuals with a chance to win prizes.
